b. 9 April 1659, d. 20 November 1728
Pierre Peter Jacob Chastain Farmer and Church WardenPierre Chastain's ancestors seem to have been in Bourges, in central France, at the time of the massacre of St. Bartholomew's, day August 24, 1572. It seems reasonable that the family fled to Charost, Province of Ardenness, France. On further religious prosecution at Charost, (Pierre Chastain) fled across the Jura Mountians to Yverdon, Canton Vaud, Switzerland. The word 'Chatain' is the standard french form, either as adjective or noun, to mean chestnut color, nut-brown, or auburn. He and Susanne Reynaud (an unknown value.) Rev John Ten Shilling Bell Chastain1

b. 1743, d. 31 July 1805
Rev John Ten Shilling Bell Chastain John Chastain was a Baptist minister. Because of the resonant tone of his preaching voice, he was known as the 'TEN SHILLING BELL'. During the spread of evangelism after it reached Virginia by 1754, when Shubal Steams, a minister of the Separate Baptist Church, came from Connecticut and settled there, our third generation Chastain ancestors were greatly influenced by this new religious challange. Like others, they were likely disenchanted with the State Episcopal Church. The movements of John and James Chastain into the Carolinas and Tennessee are remarkably correlated with the spread of Baptist churches in these states. In the South carolina baptists, 1670-1805, we find (pp. 213-214) that Rev. John Chastain probably served as pastor of the Middle Fork Saluda from sometime before 1790 through 1796 (p.213) and that he was living in Pendleton District, South Carolina, without slaves in 1790; that later he was connected with Oolenoy Church. In 1782, John was a resident of that part of North Carolina that became Sullivan Co., Tennessee, when he received land grant No. 1093, 400 acres, on Little Creek of Horse Creek. (North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee, 1778-1791, p. 24, compiled by Cartwright and Gardiner). John's will was proved July 31, 1805. (Will Book A, page 62, Pickens County, SC).
