Sawrey died on 7 December 1891 at Bond County, Illinois, at age 77; obituary stated she was predeceased by husband and five daughters.

He married Mary Izora McLerran, daughter of Albert Harvey McLerran and Maggie May Gober, on 18 October 1920 at Voca, McCulloch County, Texas. Arthur Lewis Schafer was a rancher until 1937 when he became disabled. He died on 2 March 1962 at Voca, McCulloch County, Texas, at age 74.
