     Rev John Ten Shilling Bell Chastain John Chastain was a Baptist minister. Because of the resonant tone of his preaching voice, he was known as the 'TEN SHILLING BELL'. During the spread of evangelism after it reached Virginia by 1754, when Shubal Steams, a minister of the Separate Baptist Church, came from Connecticut and settled there, our third generation Chastain ancestors were greatly influenced by this new religious challange. Like others, they were likely disenchanted with the State Episcopal Church. The movements of John and James Chastain into the Carolinas and Tennessee are remarkably correlated with the spread of Baptist churches in these states. In the South carolina baptists, 1670-1805, we find (pp. 213-214) that Rev. John Chastain probably served as pastor of the Middle Fork Saluda from sometime before 1790 through 1796 (p.213) and that he was living in Pendleton District, South Carolina, without slaves in 1790; that later he was connected with Oolenoy Church. In 1782, John was a resident of that part of North Carolina that became Sullivan Co., Tennessee, when he received land grant No. 1093, 400 acres, on Little Creek of Horse Creek. He was buried beside his first wife near his mill some four miles west of Greenville, SC. She was born on 15 January 1906.¹ She was the daughter of Farin Hollis Chasteen and Ella Gertrude Furr.¹ Emma Louise Chasteen married William Fred Hopkins on 28 November 1924. Emma Louise Chasteen died on 4 March 1998 at age 92.¹

     Emones Eugenie Chasteen was born on 25 September 1870 at Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Henry Smith Chasteen and Sarah Ann Meaders. Emones Eugenie Chasteen was a member of the Church of Christ. Her married name was Landreth. She married Will A. Landreth on 11 October 1888 at DeKalb, Bowie County, Texas. Emones Eugenie Chasteen died on 9 June 1947 at DeKalb, Bowie County, Texas, at age 76. She was buried at Hubbard Chapel Cemetery, DeKalb, Bowie County, Texas.

     Ernest Willie Chasteen was buried at at Grove Level Baptist Church Cemetery, Banks County, Georgia. He was born on 22 July 1904. He was the son of Farin Hollis Chasteen and Ella Gertrude Furr. Ernest Willie Chasteen died on 6 September 1904.

She was member of the Church of Christ.

     Louise Chasteen is the daughter of Marcus Wymer Chasteen and Jonnie Chanbers.

Chasteen and Mattie Gober.¹ Mamie Chasteen married Nimrod Benjamin Lord, son of Jesse W. Lord and Martha M. A. Gober, in 1913 at Barrows County, Georgia.^3,2

     Marcus Wymer Chasteen was buried at Arbor Cemetery, Ben Hill County, Georgia.¹ He married Jonnie Chanbers. Marcus Wymer Chasteen was born on 23 May 1883. He was the son of Newton G. Chasteen and Louisa Clementine Gober. Marcus Wymer Chasteen died on 2 October 1935 at age 52.

     Mary Bell Chasteen died of (an unknown value). She was buried at Gray Hill cemetery, Comerce, Georgia. She was (an unknown value) at Textiles.
