James Lafayette Parks died on 11 January 1908 at age 59. He was buried at Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Banks County, Georgia.

He married Georgia Caroline Neal, daughter of William Brooks Neal and Cynthia Clementine Carson, on 17 September 1877. Benjamin Eugene Parrish Sr. and Kate Bell Webb were divorced in 1927. According to Joe William Williamson, when she and Gene were divorced, she stated she helped make the money and she was going to "take him to the cleaners".
