Royal Newton Gober died last night. His daddy was The Rev. George Newton Gober - his mama was Rachel Leora Floyd. Rachel was a sister to Mary Emmaline "Amy" Floyd who married James Harvey Gober Sr (my grandma & grandpa Gober). Uncle George had a sense of humor: he named his first child Alpha; he named his last child Omega (both girls). The first & the last!

Uncle George & Aunt Ora lived in Iuka where they are buried. He married my parents William Noonan Gober & Raney Lee Belle Curtis in his parlor while Aunt Ora looked on, peeling peaches. He was often a minister at Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church in Burnsville & retired after 66 years in the ministry.

Royal told me that he & daddy (Noonan Gober) always called themselves double first cousins & more, near as they could figure it. Royal's grandparents were Jasper Newton Gober b. Franklin Co Ala 1859 & Rachel J. Dobbs. Jasper was a brother to my gr-grandpa George Washington Gober. Rachel was a sister to my gr-grandma Mary E. Dobbs. Mama said the Alzheimer's came down thru the Dobbs line.

Royal had alzheimer's which came on quickly after his beloved Judy Carroll Gober died. He had night nurses last year & just before his death he had round the clock nurses. He was so proud of Kevin's military service & Kevin going to Miss. State & always inquired about him in his letters & cards. But Royal always asked about all my kids; he loved all his people. He kept up with Noonan's children, tho he only knew the older 3, until he met Margie, Carolyn & me at the Floyd Reunions. At my first reunion, Royal "assigned" me to research the Floyd family, & created a monster, 25 years later I'm still searching & more than the Floyds!

Royal & his brothers graduated Mississippi State University. Uncle George, his daddy, told them he didn't make enough as a preacher & if they wanted to better themselves, they'd have to work to get thru college. They went to Miss State when it was still The Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi where they milked cows to pay their way thru. The boys did well: Curtis Gober became an attorney (mama said she learned the law from him). Refus F Gober was weathly Memphis realtor (his son Mackie Gober president of Memphis bank). Brig. General George Freeman Gober d. 1983 in Oxford, Miss., where he & Lowell Grisham's daddy were great friends. Claudis Gober of Iuka retired from the shoe mfg. co. where Margie worked 15 years.

Royce Rufus Gober died on 19 December 1980 at Needles, San Bernardino County, California, at age 76. He was buried at Granbury, Hood County, Texas.
