b. circa 1858, d. 18 January 1912
David Henry Gober was born circa 1858 at Mississippi. He was the son of William C. Gober and _____ McKay? David Henry Gober married Laura Annie Anders circa 1886. David Henry Gober died on 18 January 1912 at Natchez Hospital, Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi. He was buried at Old City Cemetery (outside fence no marker), Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi. He David Henry Gober 'Dave' was born Feb 1858 in Kosciusko, Attala, MS. He was the son,
and only child, of William Gober who was the son of Henry Gober and Ann McCauley of
Franklin co.MS. Dave's son, Charles Cunan Gober 'Cunny', told me David's mother was a
McKay but he did not know her first name. She died when Dave was 2.
In the Attala, MS 1860 census Dave age 2 and his father, William, were in the home of
William's mother, Ann McCauley Gober Williams.
In the 1870 Leake, MS census Dave age 13 was in the home of his uncle George
Washington Gober, after that he seem to disappear for awhile.
The next census record I have found for him is Wilkinson co. MS, 1900, with his wife,
Laura Annie Anders and children: Some of the names in the census were incorrect,
correct names of the children are as follows. William Henry Gober 'Will' [md Maud Brown], Almeada Adrisha Gober 'Meadie' [md. 1st George Neal Ashley, 2nd. Joseph Charlie Clark, 3nd.Oscar Walker], Janie Adlia Gober, my grandmother, [md Lonnie Nathan Ashley], Dewitt Gober, killed in WWI, Charles Cunan Gober 'Cunny' [md Susie A. Richardson]
I have not found a record of the marriage [est 1886] or where they lived before coming to
Wilkinson co. MS.
Uncle Cunny told me Uncle Will was born in Byhalia, MS. I 'think' the other children
were born in Wilkinson co.
David's wife, Laura Annie Permila Anders, died 12 Aug 1907, in Perrytown, Wilkinson,
MS. on land owned by George Neal Ashley.
My grandpa, Lonnie Nathan Ashley, told me that at the time of Laura’s death, there was
no food in the house and Dave had gone 'north' to see relatives to find help for his family.
He returned to find his wife dead and his two younger sons ill. Grandpa said he, Lonnie
Ashley, took money he had earned for a cotton crop he had raised of land his father,
George Neal Ashley had allowed him to farm, and bought medicine for Uncle Dewitt and
Uncle Cunny. The next year he md. grandma, her sister, Almeadie was his step-mother,
for a while.
Abt 1910, Dave took his two youngest sons and went to Winnsboro, Franklin, Louisiana.
He went to the home of Jeff and Lorinda Richardson Walker. It is unclear whether he
knew them before that time. I was told my Aunt Susie, their daughter and later Uncle
Cunny’s wife, the entire Walker family had Small Pox when Dave arrived. Her mother
tried to turn him away but Dave said he had had the small pox and he stayed to nurse
the family through their illness.
From the way Aunt Susie talked, Dave came alone at that time but came back later with
his sons, Cunny and Dewitt, living for a while in Concordia Co, around Clayton, and then
moving on to Winnsboro, Franklin, LA.
Returning to Wilkinson co. MS either in late Dec 1911 or early Jan of 1912, they found
Sandy Creek flooding it's banks. Dave became soaked trying to cross and caught
pneumonia. He died in the charity hospital in Natchez, Adams, MS, 20 Jan 1912 and
was buried in a pauper grave behind the Old Natchez cemetery. They had no money for a
headstone. By: Virginia Ewing.3
