Ernest Gober
Ernest Gober passed from this life to a better place on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005. He was born Sept. 12, 1907 in Holt Community in San Saba County, to Walter Parks Gober and Mollie Hardman Gober. He was one of 13 children. He had a twin brother, Emmett Gober, who preceded him in death.
He attended school at Holt and on Dec. 25, 1925, he married Iva Mae Fikes. The wedding was in the Lakeview community, and was performed by Bro. Carroll.
For several years they farmed in San Saba County. Their first child, Yvonne, was born in 1929 in San Saba County. In 1931, they moved to Coleman County where they farmed for a few years. Their daughter, Daphyne, was born in Coleman County. They moved to Stacey, where they ran a grocery store and a service station. They moved back to San Saba County briefly and then moved to Crockett County and then to Sheffield in Pecos County. Their son, Dwight, was born in Iraan. Ernest worked on ranches while living in Sheffield and then drove a school bus for Sheffield-Iraan I.S.D. In Jan., 1944, he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Camp Briggs in El Paso. He was discharged in May, 1944.
The family then moved to McCamey in the summer of 1944. Ernest began his working for Shell Oil Company there and retired in 1966. All three children graduated from McCamey High School. In 1967, Ernest and Iva Mae returned to San Saba County to live on the portion of the old home place that he had purchased. This land has been in the family since 1875.
In 1968, they purchased a home in Brownwood. They divided their time between Brownwood and the ranch in San Saba County.
Ernest was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Iva Mae, on July 16, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jack R. Cook; his parents; his brothers, Francis, Jimmy, Jesse and Robert and his twin brother, Emmett; his sisters, Winnie Matlock, Minnie Goins, Maymie Harvey and Mary Ila Gober.
He is survived by his daughters, Yvonne Gober Cook of Andrews and Daphyne Gober Nelson and husband Wayne of Rochelle; one son, Dwight Gober of Odessa; nine grandchildren, Randall Cook and wife Sandra of Midland, Owen Cook and wife Tammie of Andrews, Marian Nelson Young and husband Farron of Porter, Shana Nelson Cheyne and husband Sug of Spur, Rene' Gober Franks and husband Andrew of Midland, Fronye Rendon and husband Enrique of Phlugerville, Eric Ainsworth of Fort Worth, Cory Gober in the Armed Forces and Mica Gober of Odessa; great-grandchildren, James, Bethany and Brady Young, Amanda and Zane Cook, Sarah, Katie and Gina Cheyne of Spur, Erin and Conner Franks of Midland, Benjamin Rendon of Pflugerville and Silas and Blake Ainsworth of Fort Worth; step-grandchildren, Jason Ward and Jeremy Ward of Midland; and great-great-grandchild, Cadye Ward of Midland. He is also survived by his brother, Leonard Gober and wife Mora of San Angelo; and his sisters, Annie Gober Smith of Rochelle and Mabel Gober Arnold of Brownwood.
For many years he and his twin, Emmett, celebrated their birthday at Underwood's in Brownwood. Since Annie's birthday is in September, she has been added to the celebration. Since Ernest's 80th birthday, his children and grandchildren have celebrated his birthday at the ranch. He loved having two big birthday parties each year. Ernest became a member of the Church of Christ in the early 1930's while residing in Coleman County and was baptized in the Colorado River. He served as an elder in the Vine Street Church of Christ in Brownwood until his health caused him to resign. He loved the Lord, his family, his country and baseball.
The pallbearers will be Joe Bosquez, Wyn Harvey, Coy Gober, Gary and Cameron Maxwell and Brian Gober. Honorary pallbearers will be James Gunnels of McCamey, J.W. Gober of San Angelo, Bill Donahoo of Rising Star, Charles Polaski of Brownwood, Kenneth Gober of Zephyr and Clem Gober of Lake Brownwood.
The funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3 at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Farron Young, of Porter, officiating, obituary by the oldest grandchild, Randall Cook of Midland. He will be buried in the Holt Cemetery in San Saba County. He had served as a member of the Board of Directors when the Holt Cemetery Association was reorganized in 1980. He will be by his beloved wife, Iva Mae, and his son-in-law, Jack Cook. He will be just two and a half miles from where he was born in 1907. Rest with the angels -- we will miss you so much, but you are in a better place.1 He was buried on 3 February 2005 at Holt Cemetery, San Saba County, Texas.1
